STAFF ATTORNEY

RILA is looking for a full- or part-time staff attorney who is passionate about using his/her legal skills to serve the most vulnerable immigrants in Northern Virginia. This hybrid position will work with the RILA legal team to represent clients in their asylum cases before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Responsibilities and oversight include but are not limited to:

  • Work in collaboration with clients, volunteers and the RILA legal team to prepare both affirmative and defensive asylum cases.

  • Prepare all necessary motions, applications, and briefs needed for immigration court hearings and asylum interviews.

  • Work with the Asylum Supervising Attorney to strategically plan for each case for which he/she is responsible. 

  • Represent clients before USCIS and EOIR as needed. 

Required Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school

  • 3+ years experience practicing law

  • Active membership in any state bar (must be in good standing in each jurisdiction where admitted)

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Mission-aligned experience (work or lived)

  • Legal writing and/or litigation experience 

  • Knowledge of asylum law (or a willingness to learn)

  • Some foreign language skills (especially Spanish) are a plus, though not absolutely necessary

Compensation:

Dependent on hours and commensurate with experience.
