Why I Do This Work
Regina Caballero is a Senior Legal Assistant. She joined RILA in 2023.
My biggest passion in life has always been to help others. I was born and raised in El Salvador. Although my family did their best to shield me from the harsh realities of my country, I was still aware of the hardships people faced. From a young age, I knew I wanted to become someone who could help others and create change.
A few years ago, I was interning at another nonprofit organization, one that worked with my mother to be able to apply for a visa so I could move to the U.S. when I was eight-years-old. That same year, I became a U.S. citizen. This was a full-circle moment for me.
In 2023, I came across a job posting for RILA, an organization whose mission perfectly aligned with my personal passion and vision. I've now been a part of the RILA team for two years. I have learned how RILA has an unwavering commitment to accompanying clients throughout their entire journey. To celebrate their successes and offer a comforting presence during difficult times. The priority is to ensure clients feel welcomed, heard, and genuinely cared for, extending our support beyond legal representation.
Which is why I enjoy every aspect of my role as a legal assistant. My primary responsibility involves client communication, acting as the bridge between our clients and legal advocates. This includes interpreting our clients' voices accurately into English. Additionally, I handle various administrative tasks such as preparing forms, drafting client declarations, and ensuring client information is updated with the immigration court and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Every part of my job at RILA is significant, and I am lucky to join clients in their immigration journey. RILA has solidified my desire to continue working in immigration law.
My experience has ingrained in me the importance of accessible legal aid, especially for those who, like my family, could not have otherwise afforded private legal counsel. It is why I am so committed to RILA's mission: ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive the legal support they deserve and that their voices are heard and amplified within the immigration system.
